“A gateway drug is a drug that opens the door to the use of other, harder drugs. Gateway drugs are typically inexpensive and readily available.” —D.A.R.E.
D.A.R.E. is making some headlines as coming correct, because the drug free gurus recently removed weed from its list of “gateway drugs” online. Tobacco and alcohol are the only gateway “drugs” listed on D.A.R.E.’s site now which is pretty ironic. Because…
Yes, smoking weed definitely opens up the door to creativity, the fridge, Netflix/Chill, awesome shit, and gaining 20 pounds. But it also is, without a doubt, a gateway drug that leads to other drugs. There’s just no bones about it.
Would I have gone straight to coke, ketamine, and LSD without weed? Hell no! You start to walk (weed), then you start to jog (cocaine) and then you start to sprint (boofing Special K), and then you go off the deep end.
I’m glad the propaganda machine that is D.A.R.E. realizes that weed shouldn’t be compared to crack anymore, and shouldn’t be taught to kids (some who definitely use the stuff for epilepsy) as a menace to society. But telling them that smoking weed doesn’t lead to other drugs?
Straight nonsense. That’s not to say smoking weed is bad, cause it’s not. But no one just starts sticking a needle in their vein without hitting the layup line that is the bong. So as usual, D.A.R.E. gets it wrong.
They’d be better off saying something like “yes, weed is a mind-altering substance that can lead to questionable choices, but it’s also a far safer alternative to alcohol/tobacco and one a medically beneficial drug that can stop seizures and all sorts of crazy diseases”
ps. As much as I hate D.A.R.E….I love the majestic lion:
