RIP Franco the Strainhunter Who Passed Away Yesterday

The Strainhunters are the literal Dutch kings of cannabis who, with VICE, have explored and unearthed tons of knowledge about cannabis strains across the globe. They are trailblazers, icons, industry veterans and overall great guys.

One of those legends, Franco the Strainhunter, died yesterday. While the cause of death is unknown, I read on social media that he died of Malaria that he contracted while aiding sick Congolese with cannabidiol (CBD). If that’s true, the man died doing what he loved: sharing his love for cannabis.

The Strainhunters put out this heartfelt message about their comrade’s death yesterday on Instagram:

Franco is an icon and helped change so many peoples lives. He will deeply be missed as a brother, father, son, friend and so much more. “Cannabis is my passion, my bread, my home. I feel it is my duty to make sure this amazing plant is preserved and enjoyed. I am a smoker, a grower, a breeder, and a strain hunter. For life.”
Franco, the Strain Hunter May 20th 1974 – January 2nd 2017

While I never met Franco, Arjan and Heiko are two men I’m proud call acquaintances and two of the most humble and genuinely great guys I’ve met in the cannabis industry. To me, they’re all celebrities and heroes that help and will continue to pave the way for people like us to be in this legal industry.

They are about to release the next episode in their docuseries and the Congo-expedition will be must-watch material:

It’s important to honor those that have made this new dawn of cannabis legalization possible for us. Put one in the air for Franco today and never forget the impact he had on this close-knit industry of ours.

The industry came out in full force doing just that yesterday on social media:
