When Christian Laettner Was Suspended for Smoking Weed

In honor of #TBT and tonight’s NBA draft an ode to college basketball’s douchiest (and best) bro of all time who also smoked the reefer.

It’s been 23 years since Christian Laettner finished terrorizing college campuses across the nation and was drafted third overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves. While not a “bust”, Laettner’s injury-riddled career never lived up to the massive college hype the golden boy generated while at Duke.

As ESPN’s 30 for 30 “I Hate Christian Laettner” masterfully depicts, no one executed the art of getting people to hate you quite like Laettner did. But beneath the surface, as you listen to the story, you start to realize that Laettner, while certainly a douche, wasn’t all douche: he had a goal and used hate as motivation–and it worked.

Moreover, Laettner also smoked weed, both while at Duke (the episode mentions this, I believe) and then while in the NBA. And nothing proves normalcy like smoking weed (unless were talking about Aaron Hernandez).

While finishing his playing days with the Wizards in 2004, the then 34-year-old Laettner failed a drug test thanks to THC and was suspended five games by the NBA. 11 years later, with weed now very chic and NBA players dropping medical jars on TMV, Laettner’s politically correct response proves to be some ironic comedy:

“I have elected to seek professional assistance to fully educate myself as to the consequences of my behaviour to assure that these issues never interfere again with my career and my obligations to my team, my teammates and our fans,” Laettner said. [CBC]

The point? Everyone smokes weed, even arguably the best/most hated college basketball player of all time who was known as a prissy white boy.

Laettner would play one more season with the Miami Heat, but his career began to flame out all thanks to weed.
